In a survey of 1,000 people who consume breakfast at least once per week, a slight majority, 51.1% said that bread tended to be their main breakfast staple. This was followed by rice, with 44.3%. Among males overall, rice was slightly more popular than bread by 49.2% to 46.2%, but among females those preferring bread considerably exceeded rice by 56.0% to 39.4%. With regards to other items on the breakfast menu, wiener sausages proved popular among both those preferring rice and bread. The most popular fruit for breakfast was the banana. As opposed to reading the morning newspaper while eating, people in their 20s said they spend time viewing their cell phone or smart phone instead. Of the total respondents, 23.8% said they ate breakfast at their school or workplace.
