会話のトピックを選択する

会話を交わすとき大切なのは、相手が興味を持てるような質問をすることです。お決まりの挨拶をした後は、休暇、お互い興味があるニュース、生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんや孫の話など、相手が楽しめそうな話題を選んで質問をするのがいいでしょう。相手がきまり悪く感じるかも知れないような話題は避けたほうがよいでしょう。例えば、子供の学校の成績、難しい仕事状況、ぎくしゃくした人間関係、政治や宗教の問題などです。ここでもインフォーマルとフォーマルの場面で分けで表現を紹介します。

インフォーマルな場面

“I just read a book about ~. Do you know anything about it?”　“ちょうど～に関する本を読んだところなのですが、それについて何かご存知ですか？” 

“How do you like your new apartment?”　“あなたの新しいアパートはどうですか？”

“We went to Asunaro park this weekend. Have you been there?”　“今週末、あすなろ公園に行ってきました。そこへ行ったことがありますか？” 

“Please tell me about your trip to Mexico!”　“メキシコ旅行の事を話してください！” 

“Congratulations on your engagement! Tell me about the lucky man.”　“婚約おめでとう！その幸運な男性のことを話してください。”

“We’re thinking of buying a new car. Do you have any suggestions?”　“新しい車を買おうと考えています。何かお勧めはありますか？” 

“I heard the news that Prince Roberto is coming to Japan.”　“ロバート王子が来日する予定だとニュースで聞きました。”

“I love this dish. How do you make it?”　“この料理はとてもおいしいですね。どうやって作るのですか？”

“Your granddaughter must be in kindergarten now. How is she enjoying it?”　“あなたのお孫さんは今、幼稚園ですよね。そこでのご様子はいかがですか？”

“I heard that your baby was born. Congratulations! How are the mother and baby doing?”　“赤ちゃんが生まれたと聞きました。おめでとう！奥さんと赤ちゃんはどうしていますか？”

フォーマルな場面

“How has business been since we met last?”　“前回お会いして以来、ビジネスはどんな具合ですか？”

“I enjoyed the last meeting. Your suggestions really helped us on our project.”　“前回お会いした時はとても楽しかったです。あなたの提案がうちのプロジェクトに大変役立ちました。”　 

“I was really impressed with your presentation. Do you know any books I can read to help me with my presentations?”　“あなたのプレゼンテーションにとても感動しました。プレゼンテーションに役立つ本をなにかご存知ですか？”

“Your exhibit is wonderful. What project are you working on now?”　“あなたの展示は素晴らしいですね。現在はどんなプロジェクトを進行していますか？”

“The party decorations are so attractive. You must have spent a lot of time getting ready.”　“このパーティーの飾りつけはとてもすてきですね。用意するのに時間がかかったでしょう。”

“The Chamber of Commerce holiday party is coming up again. Are you going to attend this year?”　“商工会議所のホリデーパーティーがまたやってきます。今年は参加しますか？”

“The turnout for the training session looks promising. What topics will you be touching on?”　“このトレーニングセッションの出席率は高くなるようです。あなたはどのトピックに触れようとしていますか？”

“Thank you so much for coming. I hope that the trip was not too tiring.”　“お越しいただきありがとうございます。移動であまりお疲れになっていなければいいのですが” 

“I don’t think I’ve asked about your family.”　“そういえば、御家族についてお尋ねしたことがなかったような気がします。”

“Your (golf) swing is so good! What is your secret?”　“（ゴルフ）スイングが上手ですね！その秘訣は何ですか？
