A survey that measures whether females in their 20s prefer to participate in joshi-kai or girls’ nights out or gokon, which are mixers or group parties, shows that girls’ nights out are overwhelmingly more popular. Besides “fun” and “stress release,” some answers indicate that women use such gatherings to research questions of identity like “am I happy and doing my best in life compared to my peers?” and “to verify my own sense of self.” Others’ answers seemed to show the impact of the 3.11 disaster, as some participants looked for reassurance amid anxiety about the present and future --- “I want to share my feelings of anxiety and in that way dispel them.”
